James Maury Henson is an American puppeteer, animator, designer, actor, inventor, composer, filmmaker, and screenwriter, worldwide famous as are the creators of The Muppets and Fraggle Rock; and director of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. He was born in Greenville, Mississippi and raised in Leland, Mississippi and University Park, Maryland. Henson started developing puppets in high school. He created Sam and Friends, a short comedy TV show, as a freshman at the University of Maryland, College Park. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in home economics, then produced coffee commercials and developed experimental films. In 1958, he co-founded Muppets, Inc., becoming Jim Henson Company. In 1969, Henson joined the educational children's television show Sesame Street, where he helped develop the characters for the series.
